Oh boy, Khama Billiat must be kicking himself over the missed opportunity to shine in the Soweto Derby on February 23rd. That’s right, the derby that could have been his crowning glory has been snatched away from him like a hot potato.
At the start of the season, Billiat was probably thinking about how he would make a name for himself in the biggest fixture in South African football. But now, he’s nursing a season-ending injury and watching the game from the sidelines.
As if that wasn’t enough, Billiat’s future with the Chiefs is also uncertain. He’s out of contract and with his injury record, middling performances, and high salary, it’s unclear if the Glamour Boys will extend his contract.
It’s a far cry from his glory days with Mamelodi Sundowns when he was winning Player of the Season awards left, right, and center. Back then, there were talks of a potential move to Europe, but alas, it never materialized.
Instead, he joined Chiefs in 2018 and was supposed to be the catalyst for a shift in power in domestic football. But, as things stand, he’ll likely leave the club without any silverware.
It’s a shame really, because he had some glittering moments in his first campaign, but his output has dipped since then. And with all the uncertainty surrounding the club, it’s hard to argue that Billiat has been anything other than a flop.
So, as we look ahead to the Soweto Derby, there won’t be any Billiat magic to light up the game. And with his future in South African soccer up in the air, the curtain may be closing on his time in the country.
